Chris Columbus made the first two, Alfonso Cuarón the third, Mike Newell the fourth, and David Yates the last four — the longest run of the series and the reason its second half looks consistent.

The third film changed the look of the rest
Alfonso Cuarón's entry dropped the storybook framing of the first two for handheld cameras, muted colour and loose uniforms. Every film after it followed that direction.

The leads grew up on camera
The three principal actors were cast at eleven and twelve and filmed for ten years. The change across the eight films is not makeup — it is a decade of actual growing up on screen.
